The Gold Coast events calendar, season by season

A season-by-season guide to the festivals and events near Viscount on the Beach, most within walking or tram distance, from January's Magic Millions to October's Groundwater Country Music Festival.

Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise run a full calendar of free and ticketed events most months of the year. From Viscount, Broadbeach is about 15 minutes on foot, and Southport and the Broadwater are a short ride from the Florida Gardens tram stop, 500 m from the door. Two of the year’s biggest fixtures sit further out, SWELL Sculpture Festival at Currumbin and Australian Open Bowls across clubs down toward Coolangatta, so treat those as a drive or a longer tram trip rather than a stroll. Here’s what’s on, season by season, and how to get there from First Avenue.

Summer (December to February)

Summer carnival season runs from Bundall’s marquee racedays to a free surf-lifesaving finale on the sand.

  • Magic Millions, each January: marquee racedays at the Gold Coast (Aquis) Turf Club, Bundall, plus fashion and foreshore events reaching into Surfers Paradise; racedays ticketed.
  • Gold Coast Food and Wine Expo, each January: tastings, masterclasses and a celebrity chef stage at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, Broadbeach; ticketed weekend.
  • Summer of Surf, each February: the national surf lifesaving series’ final round on Surfers Paradise Beach, with a free community day and nipper programs alongside the Ironman and Ironwoman racing.

Autumn (March to May)

Autumn runs from HOTA’s screens to Broadbeach’s biggest free weekend of the year.

  • Gold Coast Film Festival, each April into May: outdoor screenings, an awards gala and ticketed sessions at HOTA; free and ticketed mix.
  • Surfers Paradise LIVE, early May: a free multi-day live-music festival on Surfers Paradise Beach, opening with the Gold Coast Music Awards.
  • Blues on Broadbeach, each May: one of Australia’s largest non-ticketed music festivals, stages spread across the Broadbeach precinct, a short walk south along the Oceanway.

Winter (June to August)

Winter runs from lawn bowls through fireworks to a tribute-artist takeover of Cavill Mall.

  • Australian Open Bowls, each June: hosted mainly at Broadbeach Bowls Club plus a dozen other Gold Coast clubs; spectator entry free at every venue.
  • SeaFire, each June: a free international fireworks competition on Surfers Paradise Beach, drawing crowds of around 40,000 to the sand.
  • Viva Surfers Paradise, each July: Australasia’s largest tribute-artist festival, centred on Cavill Mall and the foreshore, closing with the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest; mix of free and ticketed events.
  • Gold Coast Show, each August: free general entry and pay-as-you-go rides at Broadwater Parklands, Southport, with fireworks on the Friday and Saturday nights.

Spring (September to November)

Spring closes the year with sculpture on the sand, HOTA’s flagship arts festival and a free country-music weekend.

  • SWELL Sculpture Festival, each September: a free, all-hours outdoor gallery on Currumbin Beach, dozens of sculptures along roughly 1.5 km of coastline, some lit after dark.
  • Bleach*, HOTA’s flagship arts festival, has recently shifted from a mid-year slot to spring: a free opening concert paired with ticketed headline shows across music, visual art and storytelling.
  • Groundwater Country Music Festival, each October: free to attend across the streets, parks and venues of Broadbeach.

The rest of the year’s fixtures

Viscount’s blog also covers the Gold Coast Marathon and the Pacific Airshow in their own guides, each with the detail worth knowing before you book.

Getting to the action from First Avenue

Broadbeach is the easier trip: the 2 km Oceanway is paved, lit and crosses no roads, so anything at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, Broadbeach Bowls Club or the Broadbeach precinct is a straightforward 15 minute walk from the apartment. For Surfers Paradise events on Cavill Mall or the beach itself, it’s about 20 minutes on foot, or step out to the sand directly across First Avenue for SeaFire and Surfers Paradise LIVE. For Southport and the Broadwater, the Florida Gardens tram stop is 500 m from the door. SWELL at Currumbin and the Australian Open Bowls clubs further south of Broadbeach sit beyond this walk, so budget a drive or a longer tram trip for either. Free on-site parking is available for anyone driving in, with a 1.95 m height clearance worth checking against a hired van or 4WD.

Whichever event brings you, the heated pool is a reliable way to cool off afterwards, and every apartment at Viscount faces the ocean, so the beach that hosts half this calendar is the view from your own balcony.
